In a new article "The Complex Effects of Regime Complexity" published in the European Journal of International Relations, Christian Kreuder-Sonnen together with Alexander Schmotz and Michael Zürn (WZB Berlin) examines the conditions under which regime complexity can deepen or threaten international cooperation. Based on a cluster analysis of 77 interface conflicts, the authors develop a model that shows why actors turn institutional overlaps into conflicts over the prevalence of different norms and rules, and to what extent their management can ultimately lead to further integration or a fragmentation of the institutional order.
