Comprehensive psychiatry: official journal of the American Psychopathological Association
Objectives: This study investigates the long-term influence of fluctuations around the individual's means of personality functioning (PF) on mental and physical symptoms in a large sample of patients receiving psychotherapy. Methods: We reanalyzed observational data of 2094 participants (68% female; age M = 39.89 years; SD = 14.20 years) which took part in the Multicenter Effectiveness Study of Inpatient Psychosomatic Psychotherapeutic Treatment (short: MEPP) at three time points. A Random Intercept-Cross Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) was used to examine within-person longitudinal effects between PF (OPD-SQS) and depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and somatic symptom load (PHQ-15). The model was controlled for age, sex, treatment condition and treatment length. Results: Strong between-person intercorrelations were observed between all investigated constructs. At the longitudinal within-person level PF at hospital discharge predicted somatic symptom load (p < .01), depressive symptoms, anxiety and itself (all p < .05) at follow up, however, PF showed no effect during treatment (p > .05). Furthermore, depressive symptoms at baseline influenced general symptom burden and PF development during treatment (all p < .05) and showed strong effects on anxiety and somatic symptoms at follow up (p < .001). Conclusions: The results suggest a sustained influence of intraindividual PF deviations on general symptom development after psychotherapy, but also emphasize the effect of depressive symptoms in psychotherapy outcomes.

European eating disorders review: the professional journal of the Eating Disorders Association
Background: There is ample evidence on the efficacy of different therapeutic approaches in treating eating disorders. Yet, studies on the effectiveness of inpatient/day-hospital treatment of eating disorders are rare. Method: Data were retrieved from a naturalistic multi-center effectiveness study of inpatient and day-hospital treatment in departments of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in Germany (MEPP). N = 151 patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and atypical AN, as well as n = 120 patients with Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and atypical BN were included. Eating disorder pathology (EDE-Q) and BMI were assessed on admission, at discharge, and 1 year after discharge. Changes over time were analysed in both outcomes. Treatment success was assessed individually using reliable change (RC) indices. Regression analyses were used to identify predictors of RC. Results: EDE-Q scores decreased in both patient groups. One year after discharge, RC was estimated in 33.8% of patients with AN and 43.3% of patients with BN. 24.2% of patients with AN and 54.3% with BN showed partial remission. Discussion: Results from this multi-center effectiveness study are comparable to those of former national and European studies. Based on the results of individual treatment success, recommendations for inpatient/day-hospital treatment can be derived. Trial Registration: The study was registered at the German Clinical Trials Register (www.drks.de; ID: DRKS00016412).

The significance of olfaction in human behavior is well recognized, yet there is a lack of standardized measurement tools applicable to all age groups. Particularly, children and the elderly currently lack specific standardized assessment instruments. This study included 454 healthy participants (154 children, 150 young adults, and 150 older adults). After three rounds of item screening and confirmatory factor analysis, we developed a 12-item questionnaire encompassing four dimensions: “Food,” “Hazards,” “Interpersonal Relationships,” and “Spatial Orientation.” The results demonstrate that the questionnaire exhibits good test-retest reliability and structural validity. Our findings indicate a positive correlation between the perceived importance of olfaction and age across a wide age range, but this trend does not reach statistical significance within any specific age group. Children scored significantly lower than both young adults and seniors, with no significant difference between the latter two groups. Additionally, trends were observed regarding gender differences in olfactory behaviors and variations across different olfactory activities. The present questionnaire is a reliable and validated self-report measurement of an individual's significance of olfaction for people over 10 years old.

As complex individualized behaviors in mice arise even when genes and environment are held constant, emerging social group structures should also depend on individual behavior. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis drives individual behavior and is involved in certain social behaviors. Would thus the emergence of social structure depend on adult-born neurons? To answer this question, we co-housed cohorts of female mice with intact and genetically diminished general adult neurogenesis in a large-scale automated tracking system for three months and analyzed the development of social behaviors over time. Not only did female mice develop stable hierarchies, we also found that, despite forming a functioning mouse society, their dominance behavior increasingly diverged over time. Specifically, neurogenesis-deficient mice showcased a greater increase in hierarchical behavior throughout the experiment. Within the social behaviors, mice showed no genotype-based preference, indicating intrinsic causes for behavioral differences. In mice with intact neurogenesis, social rank was positively correlated with adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Nevertheless, neurogenesis-deficient mice occupied higher ranks in the emerging hierarchy than their wild-type cohabitants, while displaying less individualization for this trait. The observed insistence on dominance might therefore reflect inflexible social strategies. Thus, social intelligence and flexibility, enabled by adult-born neurons, promote social adaptability, egality, and flatter hierarchies.

Olfactory perception is a complex process driven by the chemical properties of odorants and shaped by a multitude of individual factors. As a result, predicting how an individual perceives a given odor remains challenging. We aimed to address this complexity by integrating individual response patterns, odorant properties, and psychophysiological responses into a unified model. Therefore, we tested perceptual dimensions (valence, temperature, and intensity) of 6 perceptually diverse monomolecular odorants with continuous time-series data from psychophysiological measures (respiration, heart rate, electromyography [EMG] corrugator, and EMG zygomaticus) in a sample of 41 participants. By simultaneously accounting for the odorant itself, individual rating tendencies, and both group-level and individual-specific physiological effect patterns in the nonlinear modeling process, we found that while the specific odorant and individual rating tendencies were the primary drivers of perception, the relative contributions varied significantly across perceptual dimensions. The inclusion of physiological signals significantly improved the predictive models, revealing that both generalizable (group-level) and highly individualized psychophysiological response patterns contributed to how an odor was perceived. Examination of the specific effect patterns revealed respiration and EMG corrugator as key group-level predictors for valence and intensity, while significant individual-specific effect patterns varied considerably across the perceptual dimensions. Our findings demonstrate that a comprehensive understanding of olfactory perception requires the consideration of the interplay between stimulus characteristics, idiosyncratic biases, and distinct universal versus person-specific physiological signatures, offering a more nuanced understanding of this sensory experience.

  9. Integration von Palliativversorgung in die Behandlung von Patient:innen mit hämatologischen Malignomen in Deutschland: Versorgungsrealität und Einflussfaktoren aus multiperspektivischer Sicht

    Author
    C. Gebel
    Year of publication

Interpersonal synchrony, the spontaneous coordination of actions, emotions, and physiological processes, plays a crucial role in social bonding. While existing research has significantly advanced our understanding of interpersonal synchrony, many studies rely on either artificial paradigms that may limit ecological validity or naturalistic approaches that can pose challenges for achieving sufficient statistical power. To address this, we developed and validated a semi-naturalistic verbal social interaction paradigm, in which two individuals talk about a variety of standardized neutral and autobiographical emotional topics. Sixty-nine dyads (N = 138) participated and reported valence, arousal, connectedness, and dominance after each trial. Results confirmed the paradigm's reliability and validity by showing that emotional conversations, especially when sharing one's own autobiographical event, elicited higher arousal, more valence, and increased heart rate than neutral ones, with relatively stable affective responses across trials. Participants also felt more connected during emotional conversations, particularly with closer friends. In conclusion, we are optimistic that our social interaction paradigm is a useful tool for studies of dual person neuroscience by balancing experimental control and ecological validity. Its flexible design allows for adaptation across research contexts and supports broad application. This validation establishes the paradigm's reliability, enabling future hypothesis testing regarding interpersonal synchrony.

Objective: This study evaluated the latent structure and conceptual validity of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), General Health, and Clinical/Psychosocial clusters of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) Minimum Data Set (MDS). It aimed to determine whether these clusters represent interpretable constructs and demonstrate cross-group comparability across clinical and non-clinical populations, providing a data-driven basis for item selection within a Delphi consensus process. Methods: Two subsamples were analyzed: a representative sample (N = 2,287) and a clinic-recruited sample (N = 322) from six DZPG sites. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses tested the latent structure and assessed configural, metric, and scalar measurement invariance between non-clinical vs. clinical/help-seeking groups. Results: All three MDS clusters demonstrated excellent baseline model fit (RDoC: CFI =.990, RMSEA =.037; General Health: CFI =.993, RMSEA =.037; Clinical/Psychosocial factors: CFI =.992, RMSEA =.026). Analyses confirmed configural and scalar invariance across all clusters but indicated non-invariance at the metric level for the General Health cluster. Conclusions: The results provide initial evidence for the structural validity and cross-group comparability of the RDoC and Clinical/Psychosocial clusters, while indicating limitations regarding metric non-invariance within the General Health cluster. They informed a Delphi consensus process and support the MDS as a scalable framework for diverse populations, particularly relevant for the DZPG’s effort to harmonize mental health data across institutions and contexts.
